Smith earned a bachelor's degree in medical technology from Eastern Michigan University and a bachelor's in medicine in the physician assistant program at Western Michigan University. She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She joined Great Lakes Bone and Joint Center in 1999.
