Oaklawn Hospital offers precision robotic technology that allows surgeons to perform prostatectomies laparoscopically instead of with open surgery.

Prostatectomies remove the prostate gland and typically require open surgery. The da Vinci system allows the prostatectomy to be performed laparascopically, requiring tiny incisions instead of an 8-10 inch incision. Using the robotic system has proven to be beneficial to patients, with quicker recovery, less time with a catheter, less scarring, less blood loss and transfusions, decreased post-operative pain, and lower risk of urinary incontinence and impotence.

The system allows the surgeon to reproduce the maneuverings of the human wrist, but also to perform precise movements far beyond what the human hand can do. The system is powered by state-of-the-art robotic technology that also helps the surgeon see vital anatomical structures more clearly.
